Numerous representations of the martyr-saint depict him with his eyes nearly closed, as if in serene disregard or contemplation, and in this sense, parallel to Bernini's St. Theresa--e.g., Albrecht Durer (1501) (See: Figure 179), Vecellio Tiziano (Titian) (1510 & 1522) (See: Figures 214 & 215), and Giovanni de Busi aka Cariani (c. 1519) (See: Figure 216), among many. Antonio de Bellis (c. 1640) (See: Figure 73) portrays the martyr-saint not in ecstasy, but slumped down, apparently unconscious, near death.
