Physically Mature
There are, however, a number of painters who have portrayed the martyr-saint in full physical maturity--i.e., full-fledged Apollos, Heracles--which may be seen to border on middle age. The martyr-saint becomes a fully grown man with developed musculature and often with beard. Albrecht Durer in an engraving of (1501) (See: Figure 179), depicts the martyr-saint with a developed body but with a face that is less than idealized surrounded by matted hair and a beard. Andrea Mantegna (1490) (See: Figure 5) portrayed the martyr-saint as a fully muscled adult with a physiognomy mirroring pain and age. In 1514 Hans Baldung Grien presents a nude figure bordering on being a bit overweight, certainly middle aged with a face mirroring pain and age (See: Figure 154). Both Lorenzo Lotto (1516) (See: Figure 202), and Pedro de Villegas Marmolejo (1566) (See: Figure 203) portray St. Sebastian with a beard and moustache. During the XVIth and XVIIth Centuries there were numerous representations of the martyr-saint portrayed in this manner.
