The representation of St. Sebastian in a recumbent or lying position, although not unusual, is frequently encountered, particularly in the presence of St. Irene or other ministering figures. However it is less common to encounter the saint recumbent and unattended


1) There are very few representations of St. Sebastian supine and unattended--e.g., School of Nicholas Regnier (1600+) (See: Figure 84), Marcantonio Bassetti (1620) (See: Figure 85); Louis Finson (1606) (See: Figure 86), and Nicolas-Guy Brenet (a. 1750) (See: Figure 87), among the few encountered.
